Map boundaries
Uganda's districts
The district maps use the Uganda Bureau of Statistics district layer (135 districts), published by OCHA on the Humanitarian Data Exchange (valid 24 August 2020) under the Creative Commons Attribution for Intergovernmental Organisations licence, and simplified for on-screen use. Source ↗
The district numbers are the URA workbook's (new TIN registrations, presumptive tax register): the Macro Data Portal's interface excludes cross-sectional data, so it has none. Districts are matched to the map by name; 123 of 123 workbook districts are placed, and 12 districts created after the workbook's naming have no row and are left blank, not zero.
How it is used
What was brought in, and what was not
Through the portal's programming interface
The portal's interface is the R package ugatsdb, which reads the portal's database directly (it is not a web API). The Observatory takes a snapshot with that package, so the site never opens its own connection to the database, and works behind firewalls that would block one.
Annual fiscal-year series only, nothing changed
The portal lists 9,903 series; 968 are annual on the July–June fiscal year (the rest are Annual CY 3,137, Monthly 2,928, Quarterly 2,862, Daily 8, and are not brought in). Values are exactly as published: no aggregation of daily, monthly or quarterly series, no unit conversion, no filling of blanks. Cross-sectional data (census, trade panels) is not offered by the interface.
Read with care
Portal series are not URA figures and can differ from similarly named URA series (another publisher, revision or definition). Units are taken only from what a series' label states; where it states none, the unit shows as “not stated”. A year that had not finished when its dataset was last updated is flagged as provisional or projected.
Refreshing the snapshot
The portal updates monthly. To refresh, run npm run macro:refresh on a machine with R and network access to the portal's database; it exports the series, validates them and rebuilds the snapshot. The data is public: the portal states that, as it is published elsewhere, it is free for the general public.
