How to cite

Give the numbers their source.

Every indicator and every chart view has a Cite button that writes the reference for you. This page explains what a good citation of Observatory data contains, and how to cite the Observatory itself.

The rule

Cite the publisher, name the Observatory, date your visit

The publisher comes first

The figures are the Uganda Revenue Authority's (or the Bank of Uganda's, UBOS's, the Ministry of Finance's) work, so they are the author. The Observatory is where you retrieved them.

Say which data, and which years

Name the indicator and the fiscal years covered. Fiscal years run July to June, so 2024/25 is July 2024 to June 2025.

Add the address and the date

Figures can be revised and years added. The retrieval date and the address let a reader see exactly what you saw.

Examples

One indicator, five styles

The example cites the Net URA Collections series. On a real page the Cite button fills in the indicator you are looking at, and today’s date. A publication year is given only when the source states one; otherwise the reference says n.d. (no date) rather than guessing.

Series from the Macro Data Portal

Cite the original publisher

Series that come through the Uganda Macro Data Portal (for example the Bank of Uganda’s exchange rates or UBOS’s GDP tables) are cited to the publisher named on the series, with the portal given as the route they reached the Observatory by. The Cite button on those pages does this for you, and it also says so when a year had not finished when the dataset was last updated.

Charts and images

Every image carries its source line

Downloaded chart images have a source line printed at the foot, so the picture still names its origin when it travels without the page. It reads like this:

Please keep that line when you reproduce a chart, and add a citation in your text or caption.
